And so it goes

We’re flying through October, and November 5th is fast approaching. It’s hard to believe it has almost been two years. But it has been, and so much has happened in that time.

The biggest event was the birth of Oscar’s little brother, Felix, back in December. He is a delight to have around; pretty happy and mellow, although he’s starting to show a little more of a stubborn streak, and is forming some stronger opinions (especially when it comes to sandwiches, they’re his favourite). Our family really feels complete. In no way have we replaced Oscar (nor would we want to), instead we’ve found a balance, or a sweet spot, with our 4 kids. Two girls, two boys. Oscar comes up in conversation quite often, and even manages to get gently teased sometimes. Alice will proudly tell people she has two brothers. We keep him in our hearts, each in our own way, and look forward to telling Felix more about him as he grows up. We visit the cemetery, and it’s so lovely to see all that goes on there, it feels like Oscar is never alone.

As his birthday approaches, I find myself thinking of plans for the day. Like last year, we’ll celebrate with carrot cake (it’s become our tradition since that is what we had at the hospital when we sang him happy birthday). And like last year we’ll take cupcakes for the staff at the hospital. It feels like both a thank you and a little party with people who knew him.

Times goes on, life goes on, but our little boy is always with us. He taught us so many things, and changed our perspective on life. We try to savour the little joys, even amongst the chaos and challenges. And almost two years later, I still wouldn’t change a thing.

We’ll always love you little man.
